Mike Fahler – HO
22’ X 44’ multi-level with varied types of benchwork still under construction. The primary railroad is the Nickel Plate. It's designed for mostly prototypical operations from Bellevue to Conneaut. Also included is a live interchange with the New York Central at Cloggsville. The NYC has a continuous loop sharing the Cleveland Union Terminal then dropping to a lower level. Both RRs share a 4-track helix to change elevations. Mike has used the space above the helix to incorporate the old John Armstrong method of loads in-empties out concept. The Euclid quarry branch supplies stone for a cement plant opposite the backdrop. Plans are for a large area of the Cleveland Flats with the viaduct and a truncated CUT building. Most of the benchwork is in and about 50-60% of the track is in and wired. Trains are running via the quarry branch back to the main. The NYC loop is also running. A few buildings but no scenery. DCC NCE control.
Mike’s note: An overzealous superintendent is pushing the bridge crew to complete to the Gauntlet track swing bridge over the Black River by May 1, 1957. Word has it that he has given bribes to Lorain Co. Commissioners and will receive a large bonus if completed on time. Unofficial reports have been circulating that large pieces of steel, as well as buckets of rivets, are at the bottom of the river.
Bram Bailey The Ontario Central Railway – HO
This is a 50’ x 32’ double decked railway. The era is September, 1967 and the locale is Northern Ontario Canada. There is a central classification yard serving five subdivisions. Operation is point to point with 18 staging tracks. The main line is single track with passing sidings. There is a large 4-way junction that will eventually have functional interlocking. The two major industries are a paper mill and nickel/copper smelter. The smelter has its own switching railroad. The new Providence Bay Docks are in operation which features 5 piers, 3 rail/barge slips and a flour mill complex. Power is primarily first generation MLW (Canadian Alco). Much of the scenery hard shell is in place, but none of that is anywhere near finished. The railway is controlled by a wireless NCE DCC system. Operation is controlled by a dispatcher using MBS over a telephone network.
Gary Dunn Louisville & Northern Railroad – HO
The L&N is a HO scale railroad with its center point in Louisville, KY. Built around a single car garage, it measures 10’ X 23’. Built as a semi-prototypical railroad featuring live coal loads, operating coal dumper, and lots of switching. Detailed scenery covers 90 % of the railroad and it is controlled with Digitrax DCC.
Jim Moore COLD CREEK & LAKE ERIE RAILROAD – HO
The layout fills a 30’ x 40’ room and is an interpretation of the New York Central from Cleveland to Toledo, double tracked main. Era is 1968 when PRR and NYC became Penn Central. The railroad is six months into the build using metal studs and channels. All bench work and overhead are in, overhead lighting is working and DDC wiring under bench work is being installed.
Dale Owens Kalispell, Bellevue & Key Largo Railroad
The layout was freestyle but is evolving into a line that runs from Kalispell Montana, to Bellevue Ohio and then to Key Largo Florida. You will see a lot of NKP, Norfolk & Western and B&O, steam and early diesel. I hope to eventually have KB & KL paint scheme on most of the power. I am currently working on a steam servicing facility. Scenery is maybe 50% complete.
